Poetry, to me, is the expression of imagery and ideas through language, that is concentrated and has a particular rhythm and flow. It has been a feature of cultures all over the world for centuries. The writing of poetry enables us to unlock our essence and communicate our ideas and emotions in such a way that our readers can easily relate. Poetry can be a journal marking events in our lives, it can be catharsis, confessional, or the medium for social change. Poetry can be deeply personal or a vehicle of social commentary or social change. Above all poetry is art.

At the beginning of this century poetry was becoming less popular as a medium and more the providence of the intelligentsia. But poetry has had a resurgence and more poetry is being purchased. Poetry popularity has surged in the younger age groups both as readers and writers.

Abdulrouf Wasiu as a keen young Nigerian poet, is beginning to carve a place for himself in the poetry world. In his first collection “The Voice Within” he has chosen a selection of his best work. His favourite pieces are : ‘The writing
