Why I stopped using Skineal and other steroids on my acne after 9 years

This is more of personal experience. Yes, I have battled with severe acne and terrible spots using Skineal for more than 9 years. I have my breakthrough now and that is exactly what I will show you in this article.

Before we proceed, I’ll share my experience using Skineal and other steroids with you, and after reading, please find somewhere to throw them. They will do more harm than good to your facial skin.

It started around 9 years ago, this severe cystic acne. Of course, there are different types of acne otherwise known as pimples: we have blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Let me tell us about them:

Types of Acne

Blackheads (open comedones)

Blackheads occur when a pore is clogged by a combination of sebum and dead skin cells. The top of the pore stays open, despite the rest of it being clogged. This results in the characteristic black color seen on the surface.

Whiteheads (closed comedones)

Whiteheads can also form when a pore gets clogged by sebum and dead skin cells. But unlike with blackheads, the top of the pore closes up. It looks like a small bump protruding from the skin.

Papules

Papules occur when the walls surrounding your pores break down from severe inflammation. This results in hard, clogged pores that are tender to the touch. The skin around these pores is usually pink.

Nodules

Nodules occur when clogged, swollen pores endure further irritation and grow larger. Unlike pustules and papules, nodules are deeper underneath the skin.

Because nodules are so deep within the skin, you can’t typically treat them at home. Prescription medication is necessary to help clear these up.

Cysts

Cysts can develop when pores are clogged by a combination of bacteria, sebum, and dead skin cells. The clogs occur deep within the skin and are further below the surface than nodules.

These large red or white bumps are often painful to the touch. Cysts are the largest form of acne, and their formation usually results from a severe infection. This type of acne is also the most likely to scar.

Now out of all these six types of acne, a cyst is the worst because it goes way deep into the skin and breaks skin tissue when tampered with. Also, there is no way a cyst will heal without leaving a spot. If you pick it too, it results in scars which are mostly permanent.

This cyst was what I had for over 9 years. I tried verified home remedies that cure acne: honey, lime juice, aloe vera, egg white and think of it. None worked.

And this is when I resorted into Over the Counter (OTC) drugs: Funbact A, Fulcin, Skineal, Acneaway, Nixoderm and the likes.  Just name any OTC drugs people use for pimples, I tried all.

My Experience with Skineal

So why did I particularly mentioned Skineal in this article? After all said and done with these OTC topical drugs, someone told me about Skineal and I tried it.

Now don’t get me wrong, if your acne is not a severe case, I mean if you don’t have cystic acne or you just have rashes on your face, Skineal is the best bet for you. It will clear your face and make it whole again like you never had any case of blemishes.

Why I stopped Using Skineal and other steroids

But in my case, with cyst, I made a terrible mistake opting for Skineal. I bought the 10g tube for about #450 then. I used it and I noticed a very quick heal on my face. I bought the second and the third and the fourth.

By this time, my face was already as clean, light and fresh as a newborn. Little did I know these drugs are just steroids. Little did I know until I began having new breakouts and the most unfortunate part was, Skineal couldn’t cure these new breakouts anymore.

I continued using but it kept lightening my face, leaving the acne inflamed, red, big and so obvious with big red and black scars all over my face too. That was when I stopped it.

The reason for this is, steroids like Skineal and the likes get so weakened when used for a longer period of time that the bacteria causing the inflammation adapts to them, when this happens they will have no effect on the bacteria and unable to cure new breakouts.

This is when the problem will set in. Yes, acne-causing bacteria are the most adaptable and stubborn.

My final breakthrough

This is the part you have been waiting for and I’m happy to share with you as well. My breakthrough with pimples started with a simple logic: I stopped using handkerchief and towel on my face. It was quite late before I realize that.

They say don’t touch your face if you have pimples. That alone is not enough, stop using handkerchief and towel on your face. If you sweat, let it dry or wash it off with water and leave the water to dry on its own except you are going to wash your towel after each use.

After taking your bath, leave the water on your face to dry by itself. That is the first thing you need to know.

Secondly, get yourself Dudu Osun (Black Soap). It’s available in almost all retail stores now.

Use Dudu Osun alone for your face, to wash twice per day and use any moisturizing cream after to keep your skin from being dry and irritated.

Then lastly, buy Benzyl Peroxide. That’s the ultimate cure. I recommend Benzac AC which is the brand I use.

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is a non-prescription drug that works to destroy acne-causing bacteria in your pores. BPO works primarily as an exfoliating agent by increasing the turnover of the skin and removes the mixture of sebum and dead skin cells from the pores.

According to Teen Vogue;

“Benzoyl peroxide is a powerful ingredient that is effective against all kinds of acne lesions (blackheads, whiteheads, and big red pimples). It is bactericidal, meaning it kills bacteria, rather than simply slowing down their growth.

It also works very quickly, improving acne as early as five days after starting treatment. It’s a great first-line treatment for acne, but it’s also helpful to use in combination with antibiotics. In fact, benzoyl peroxide has the ability to prevent antibiotic resistance!”
